The day will come when your sweet little infant will outgrow their nursery, and it will be time for a more fitting toddler room setup with all the fixings.
Frequent escapes from their crib in the middle of the night will be a telltale sign that the time has come for the transition.
So when the time comes to prepare your toddler’s new room for the big kid they are becoming, there are some specific items to set up their room with that you’ll be sure to want to include.
These are all the items you should include in your toddler’s room to make sure it is as comfortable and functional for him as possible.
This post is all about what you need for a toddler room setup.

Toddler Room Setup Essentials:
1. Toddler Bed
To ensure that you don’t have to worry about your toddler constantly face-planting on their bedroom floor in the middle of the night as they try to free themselves from the confines of their crib, you will need a toddler bed.
They are adorably small, low to the ground for easy entry into and out of bed, and include little bumpers that will protect them from accidentally rolling out of bed and smacking the floor mid-sleep.
You can pick a basic bed that will match with anything or pick a specific theme that you can replicate around the entire room.
2. Toddler Bedding
It is wise to have two toddler bedding sets on hand or at least an additional set of crib sheets in case of any accidents such as spilled milk, puke, or poo, or anything else unexpected.
NOTE: A full-size crib mattress is meant to fit a toddler bed NOT the mini crib mattress.
Since toddler bedding fits a crib mattress, you can either recycle the crib bedding they had as an infant or upgrade them to a new, slightly more mature bedding set.
The set will include a comforter, fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcase.
After that, you can buy any additional bedding supplies and accessories you want your child to have.
I bought a separate, additional Lightning McQueen Blanket to match my son’s Lightning McQueen bed and bedding set.
3. Pillow
Your toddler will now be ready for the extra added comfort of a pillow.
They may already have one from their crib days, but if not, they’re probably ready for one now.
You can get them a standard adult-size pillow or opt for a cute little toddler pillow that’ll be a just-right fit for their head.
FYI the pillowcase in your toddler bedding set fits the Standard Size Pillow.
The Toddler Pillow will require a toddler-size pillowcase.
4. Mattress Protector
Your toddler will be potty training at some point, and leaks and accidents are bound to happen.
Be one step ahead of the blunder by layering their crib mattress with a crib-size mattress protector.
This will make cleaning up easier by only removing the mattress protector and cleaning it instead of cleaning the entire mattress and any other area where urine may have seeped.
The mattress pad can be removed from the bed and washed and dried in your standard home machines.
It also provides another little layer of soft, cushiness to make your toddler’s nighttime slumber more comfy and enjoyable.
5. Night Light
Little ones tend to get uneasy in the dark, and their imagination about things that lurk in the dark can sweep them away.
Help ease their fears and discomfort by illuminating their room with a night light.
Also, the extra light will be helpful to little potty trainers who are working hard at perfecting their pottying craft by getting up and heading to the bathroom for late-night tinkles (pee sessions).
6. Toy Box
The more special occasions that come and go and the more trips to the store you have, the more your toddler’s room will fill up with toys.
Keep their room organized and make it easy for them to know where to find them all with a toy box.
One of these large toy boxes that double as a little bench is cute and doable, but I prefer the toy boxes with separate bins.
Using separate bins kept my son’s toys very organized and made it easy to find what he was looking for when he was ready to play.
I kept all the cars in one bin, transformers in another, toy tools in another, toy weapons in another, small electronics in another, and so on.
7. Book Stand
For avid book readers, story listeners, or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library receivers, a bookshelf to keep all the accumulating stories in order, tidy, and easily accessible will be necessary.
We signed up all of our babies for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
It’s a wonderful free service that sends your child one free age-appropriate book per month until they turn 5.
The type of bookshelf arrangement you decide on is relatively dependent on your child.
My oldest son was more responsible and reserved, and he did well with the free-standing bookcase that allowed him to access his books on his own.
My younger boy is much more rough and devious, so his books needed to go up on a tiered shelf so he couldn’t just randomly tear them down and then tear them up.
8. Table and Chairs Set
For activity time and some playtime, it is nice to have your toddler’s room equipped with a table and chair set (we had this in Lightning McQueen style as well).
Our son would sit at his little table and play with some of his toys and color and paint.
9. Lounge Chair
Sometimes it’s nice to relax in your room in a nice, cushy spot that ISN’T the bed.
We wanted our son to have a comfy spot for lounging aside from just his bed.
So we got him a comfy lounge chair that he enjoyed relaxing in when he would go to his room and have movie time.
10. Cordless Blinds
What room would be complete without the privacy and lighting control that blinds provide?
Open them during the day for your toddler to get a nice dose of vitamin D through their window. Then close them at night for privacy.
Or leave them open if your toddler likes looking at the night sky.
I recommend getting cordless blinds. They are ideal for small children since corded blinds pose a significant safety hazard to little ones.
11. Curtains and Curtain Rod
In addition to blinds, curtains make the room look even more attractive and add to the decor.
Choose a matching color for the common theme of their room, or just go along with the same theme you’ve already selected.
We chose just to select a color that would match the common theme of the room.
12. Lamp
Add a lamp for controlled lighting in their room.
At night, when the sun goes down and natural light from the window just isn’t enough, it’s nice to have a lamp in your toddler’s room.
I prefer softer light from a lamp instead of the blaring light emitted from an overhead light.
We chose a floor lamp with an adjustable reading lamp attached to it and put it near his table and chair set.
The smaller desk lamp portion illuminated the table surface while he colored and played, and the upper lamp portion illuminated his entire room.
13. Rug
Add to the cute, cozy uniqueness of the bedroom with a cute rug. A nice rug will give it a cozier feel overall.
14. Hamper
A hamper in the room is nice and convenient for collecting their dirty clothes.
You can also begin to familiarize your toddler with chores by simply having a hamper in their room.
Hold them accountable for making sure their dirty clothes make it into their hamper instead of on the floor.
15. Trash Bin
A little trash bin in their room can teach them to keep their room tidy.
They can be responsible for disposing of little papers from activities or broken toys after playtime is over.
You can choose something decorative or something basic that will get the job done.
16. TV
If you approve of your toddler having a TV in their room (we did, we wanted his room to be his own little haven), get a wall-mountable TV to keep elevated.
With a tv wall mount, you can ensure they are not watching TV from way too close of a view or potentially knocking it over or breaking it.
You can opt for a smart TV or regular TV with a DVD player for children’s videos.
The only thing you may need to add is more decor.
